Here are some tips at designing small bathrooms.
Put Only What You Need
Ask yourself if you really want a bathroom that doubles as a living room. Chances are you will only really be spending a limited time in your bathroom. You are also not likely to be doing a lot of things in it. If you use your bathroom as it is meant to be used, then you don't need a lot of things in it. Get rid of extra fixtures and storage units. Keep only those that you can actually use for a little relaxation and for the essential functions of a bathroom.
Choose Small Items
If you live with average sized people, you really do not need big fixtures. Big toilets, tubs, faucets, showers and sinks would look terrible in a small bathroom. They will also eat much more space. The fixtures should be appropriate to your size but nothing more. You should choose the smallest size of all fixtures that will fit you and your needs. The visual impact and the actual effect would be a small bathroom that is roomy and unobstructed.
Decorating a small bathroom will change it so that it looks appropriate. There are some things that shouldn’t be tackled at least right away. First, try not to do any major renovations. The cost will skyrocket and there are so many things that can be done by decorating. Renovations are best saved for another time when things have settled down and the people have saved enough money.
Depending on the age of the home, the toilet may have a large tank for water. It can be replaced but there is something else that can be done. Add a gallon jug of water to the tank and then the amount of water used is much less. The entire toilet can be changed at the same time that the renovation will be done.
Something else that can be done when decorating a small bathroom is to resurface the porcelain bath tub. If the bath tub looks bad then go buy some bath tub refinisher and do it without a contractor. The bath tub will look brand new and will really make the bathroom shine. Decorating a small bathroom can be fun and can even give a young couple something to work on together.
To give your bathroom a light and airy feel you need to use light or neutral colors. Using light shades will also make the bathroom seem much larger than it is. When you use darker colors or patterned wallpapers the walls will appear to close in giving the bathroom a claustrophobic feel.
2. Replace the old toilet with a modern one
Newer modern toilets are much more compact and efficient these days. The older style can be quite imposing. Replace the old toilet and remember to leave adequate space around and in front of the toilet. You will find there are regulatory measurements for this. You don’t want to have your knees around your ears when using the lavatory.
3. Use frameless shower screens
Using a frameless shower screen is like using mirrors to create a bigger room. It gives the optical illusion of being bigger than it really is. Frameless shower screens are also easier to clean. If that isn’t an easy option, then perhaps a sliding shower screen will help out if you are tight on space.
4. Use your corner spaces
Corner shelving and storage units can be a godsend for utilizing the area in those corner spaces. A tall narrow set of shelves looks great with your bath towels rolled up and placed in it. Another good option for shelving is the type that fits above the the toilet cistern. These are both practical ideas where storage space is limited.
5. Install your shower over the bath
For a small bathroom with limited space you can install your shower over the bathtub. A practical idea for those who want to retain their bathtub. Just think of the cleaning you will save on, as you don’t have to clean a separate shower stall. Another idea is to replace the bathtub with a half sized bath tub. These are big enough to bathe a child and will certainly save on space.
